When Rod Evans founded Upside in 1989, he ventured to create a firm that would truly listen to what clients were asking for and follow through by meeting their requirements. He wanted to create an environment that was challenging, fun, respectful and fostered a family environment. Throughout our long history, we have diligently worked to achieve this objective and continue to keep clients and staff our number one priority. Chris Read, President, is continuing this focus on people ensuring that we achieve this objective.

In the early growth phase of the company, Upside gained recognition in the pipeline industry as a provider of quality services. Upside also provided services to the upstream pipeline and facilities sector of the Oil and Gas industry.

With the success and continued support of its strong client base, Upside moved into its current home base located in Victoria Park in 2003 to accommodate growth. Driven by customer demand and business plans to expand the corporate offering, Upside developed additional expertise to service oil and gas production facilities and the medium heavy oil sector. A Management Committee was formed in 2005 to ensure that customer requirements were being met and that internal systems were being developed and strengthened to support larger projects. Banyan Engineering was purchased in 2006 to boost project execution capabilities and expand the customer base. An internal Quality Management System was developed and rolled out in 2007 to ensure consistency of design to maintain the highest quality of engineering deliverables. To further support expansion, the Management Committee evolved into the Leadership and Operations teams in 2008 and was charged with strengthening existing systems and developing new systems. 2013 was a great year for Upside. The management team joined company ownership in October showing that we are focused on a sustainable future and Upside was also a winner in the Canada’s Best Managed Companies program for 2013. In 2014, the office building expansion was completed and Upside re-qualified to maintain its Best Managed Company status. In 2015, Chris Read was appointed President. The achievement of these goals has ensured that Upside continues to remain a supplier of choice for the industry and is an employer of choice in the competitive engineering profession.
